Exaggeration

Alex Box - Rankin
The second artist I have chosen to focus my work on is Rankin and looking at the makeup artist (Alex Box) that has created the models creative side using different makeup to create a interesting and unusual image that looks amazing and works really well. Rankin is a well-known photographer that I have previously looked at in my work due to his high level of planning and interest throughout all of his images. Rankin has given his theme an obvious intention of using an extravagant amount of makeup and detail on his model and for all of his images. Each image is from a different shoot, which shows the photographer must of taken hundreds of images to make sure he gets the perfect angle and standard of quality he possibly can. I believe Alex Box has worked well with Rankin to get this interesting and high quality of makeup, which works at a very high quality with all of the materials, and equipment the artist has used. Rankin's work is recent and all of these shoots have been done within a period of years. Throughout all of Rankin's images you can see the link and the development in all of his images and you can see the link. Within all of the images you can see the relation between the colours the artist has used and you can see the development. Throughout some of his images you can see that Rankin has also used Photoshop to create his effective makeup on the model instead of painting it directly. Deliberate exaggeration is shown in all of this artists work to bring the audience to the subject of the image (the model.) Alex Box has also used symbols, patterns and various shapes throughout his work to create an interesting and intriguing image that is effective and engages the audience to show interest into all of his work. All of this artists work I have looked at are different due to the angles used and the compositions. The photographer positions the model at various angles and places to create a bland background to bring all of the audiences attention on the main focus; the model. Every individual image creates a different mood, this depends on the image itself and the colours used. For example if its a grey, black and white tone it gives off a cold and aggressive mood to catch the audiences attention, where as a lighter, brighter colour makes the image more interesting and eye catching. In all of the examples of Rankin's work below I have a strong interest to every individual piece especially the images with more vibrant colours and exaggeration in his work due to the stronger link within my work. I will next experiment with more colour and makeup using patterns within my work. I will also use more vibrant colours in my work and exaggerate the use of makeup to create a more 3D effect and structured piece on the model. I will also experiment using Photoshop trying to draw on top of my image using patterns and shapes in my work to create development throughout my work.
